The vast majority of our site’s content is made in Musescore. Once we have it written, we can convert it into PDFs or other readable formats. If you like writing in plain text you can use LilyPond, but Musescore has a much smoother learning curve. Musescore Guide

What to transcribe?

Find a Piece Your first objective is to find a piece of music that you would like to digitize. Some good websites for this are musopen.org, imslp.org, and sheetmusic-free.com. Make sure the piece is in the public domain. Some websites with free sheet music actually contain pirated content, which you should steer clear of. I go through all submissions and I won’t post anything that is still under copyright. Once you have the piece, download it as a PDF....

The Easiest Option

Try This Before Anything This will not work for every piece, but musescore offers a tool that will automatically scan a PDF and try and turn it into a musescore file. Go to musescore.com/import, make an account, and upload that PDF. It will attempt to make a conversion, and if it works it will save you a lot of work. This won’t work far more often than it will, but it’s worth a try because it can save you hours of work....

Installing Musescore

Download and Install Install Musescore by going to the download page and downloading the version for your operating system and following the installation instructions. Once you open musescore, it will give you the option to tour the software. We’d recommend you go through it, but if you ended up skipping it, we’ll show you the basics. Next Step

Typesetting The File

The Very Basics In order to input notes, press N. Select the note on the top, the timing, and left click the location in the staff to add it in. You can use the numbers 1-10 as hotkeys, and it’s strongly recommended to learn those because it makes the process much, much faster. You can add time signatures, clefs, and accents from the side. You can customize a measure or instrument by right clicking on the staff....
